PROGRAMS
Patricia Verhagen knows how to captivate the most sophisticated audiences. Her recitals have more to offer than excellence in musical performance only, because of her intelligent thematic approach and the deployment of visuals.
RECITALS
• Classical program with works of Haydn, Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Turina and De Falla.
• French program with works of Ravel, Debussy and Fauré on the theme ”Wind and Water”, performed on modern piano or a period Pleyel.
• Spanish program with works of Albeniz, de Falla, Granados and Turina.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
• Waltz and Tango: from raunchy to respectable
This program illustrates the development of waltz and tango in piano music. Both dances were reviled, when first played and danced, : too raunchy, too vulgar! Now these dances are accepted and respected whether danced or played. The first part of the program reveals the development of the waltz. The influence and style of composers as Mozart, Schubert and Chopin, but also Glinka, Grovlez and Gershwin on the waltz provides a fascinating listening experience. As do the tangos written by Spanish composers as Turina and Albeniz, the Brazilian composer Nazareth and of course the famous Piazolla. A Tango Milonga and a Habanera illustrate the rhythmic origin of the tango.
French programme with works of Ravel, Debussy and Fauré illustrated with slides of impressionist paintings.
• Bréville-programme: the solo sonata, sonata for viola and piano and seven sketches for piano solo.
Pierre Onfroy de Bréville (1861-1949), a forgotten composer, wrote beautiful music in which the influence of his master César Franck but also of his contemporary Claude Debussy can clearly be heard. Later he developed his own style which resulted in a large oeuvre ranging from dramatic to lyrical themes and melodies. His piano solo compositions and the viola-piano and cello-piano sonata are perfect examples of his accomplished style. For a really authentic atmosphere this concert may be performed on an Erard, a splendid period instrument from the Bréville days.
